There is no delicate way to say this. Our country is f***ked up. Everyday I look at my news feeds and watch the television media and just shake my head in disgust. How did a country that once garnered respect become one that garners disgust? All I see are stories illustrating how sickening our society has become.
A gunman who may have pledged allegiance to ISIS opened fire early Sunday morning in a packed Orlando [LGBT] nightclub, killing 50 people and wounding at least 53 more in a bloody scene that ended hours later when police stormed the building and killed the shooter.
“We know enough to say this was an act of terror and an act of hate,” President Obama said in a speech from the White House on Sunday, cautioning that it was still early in the investigation.
And yet this same President refuses to use the words radical or extreme when speaking about ISIS. I don’t know about you, but the actions of the gunman/murderer at the nightclub seem a little radical and extreme to me.
But wait, there’s more. This is not the first time the LGBT community has been the target of would-be jihadists.
…an imam speaking in Orlando in April said that killing gays according to Islamic law should be done “out of compassion”. (View full story)
But those of us who want to be safe from this kind of hatred and violence are berated and called racists because we want to ban Muslims from entering our country. Their religion, based on Islamic law, hates everything this country stands for – freedom of religion (even if it is not Islam), freedom of expression, and having basic human rights for man and woman and that person living in Oregon who is the first legal non-binary.
And yes, freedom of religion includes those that want to practice Islam. But at this time, I am practicing my right for self-preservation. And that includes not allowing those who might do me harm into this country. And as sad and regretful as it is, preventing those who intend no harm from coming in as well, at least until we have a way to tell the difference between the two.
What’s seriously screwed up is that many of those people who are calling me a racist and bigot and any other hateful word they can think of because of my views, have become the aggressors and proliferators of violence and hatred. If you want to call me horrible names and disagree with my views, that is your right. And whether or not we see eye to eye, I would defend your right to call me horrible names until my dying breath. But you have seriously overstepped by trying to prevent MY right to the same freedom of speech and ideas. Especially when you do so through violence.
Protesters jumped on cars, pelted Trump supporters with eggs and water balloons, snatched signs and stole “Make America Great” hats off supporters’ heads before burning the hats and snapping selfies with the charred remains.
Several people were caught on camera punching Trump supporters.
In one incident captured on camera, a Trump supporter was struck hard over the side of the head as he was walking away from a group of protesters. The attack left him with blood streaming down his head and onto his shirt.
Not sufficiently disgusted yet by the lack of humanity displayed by your fellow citizens? Here’s yet another a story for you from the same rally:
Following Trump’s San Jose Rally, a woman wearing a ‘Trump 45’ jersey was assaulted by a group of #NeverTrump protesters outside a Marriott hotel. The full 3-minute video was posted by a bystander. A bystander who thought capturing the event on video was more important than coming to this woman’s aid. A bystander who fled after the first barrage but continued filming through safety of the glass walls of the Marriott lobby. A bystander who stood next to Marriott employees that watched this woman being attacked and yet prevented her from entering the lobby of the hotel, pulling the doors closed as the woman tries to get in, where she could find safety. Forgetting for a moment the reason why these mobs even exist, where the f**k is human decency? How NO ONE took any action to assist this woman, and even took action preventing assistance, is just so incomprehensible to me. I can’t even wrap my head around the callousness of humanity in general these days. It’s not just the breakdown of our country. It is the breakdown of humanity in general. And this breakdown is not limited to the United States.
And these are just a few of the news stories I have come across in the last year. And believe me, there are many many more. The actions of the human race have become more and more depraved.
Have you ever heard of the crime of “depraved indifference”, also known as “depraved-heart murder”?
Depraved-heart murder is the form of murder that establishes that the willful doing of a dangerous and reckless act with wanton indifference to the consequences and perils involved, is just as blameworthy, and just as worthy of punishment, when the harmful result ensues, as is the express intent to kill itself. This highly blameworthy state of mind is not one of mere negligence. … It is not merely one even of gross criminal negligence. … It involves rather the deliberate perpetration of a knowingly dangerous act with reckless and wanton unconcern and indifference as to whether anyone is harmed or not. The common law treats such a state of mind as just as blameworthy, just as anti-social and, therefore, just as truly murderous as the specific intents to kill and to harm.
Remind you of any of the actions or in-actions of people mentioned in the articles throughout this post?
However, despite all of the above, there are a few small rays of hope that all is not lost. These stories of good make such an impression because they are so few and far between, lost in the deluge of hate, negativity, and callous indifference, and in stories about the Kardashians and Justin Bieber and Game of Thrones spoilers. But they exist, and that is something in itself.
That’s never been more true than for Freya, a pup dubbed “Britain’s loneliest dog” by the Mirror in May after the outlet learned she had been in the care of Freshfields Animal Rescue in Liverpool for six years. During that time, more than 18,000 potential owners passed her by, despite her being a “sweet” and “friendly” dog.
The story came to the attention of Michael Bay, director, who not only gave Freya a role in his upcoming Transformers movie, but vowed to find her a forever home or adopt her himself.
I don’t know about you but I much prefer these types of stories to those at the beginning of my post. The question is, “Are you going to take action – vote, hold your elected officials responsible, help your fellow man, woman or non-binary, and not sit by in indifference – or are you going to let these small pieces of hope dwindle into non-existence?”
